Tour de Timor - Race Profile

Tour de Timor is one of the toughest mountain bike races in the world. The race is 410 km mountain bike competition spread over 5 days and through the towns, villages and mountains in East Timor.

The race commenced in 2009 to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of East Timor's independence, and brought together 500 new visitors, 288 riders from 12 countries, over 100 registered media and the largest level of Timorese participation in any event of the young country’s history. It was an initiative of HE the President of the Republic, Dr. José Ramos-Horta, as part of his “Dili – City of Peace” campaign.

The 2010 Tour de Timor course will take riders to new frontiers. Famed for its smooth seaside rides, gruelling climbs, spectacular mountain views and unprecedented crowd support, riders will be treated to a rare and special insight into Timor’s unique geography, environment, people and culture.

The course for 2010 will travel West from Dili along the scenic coastline, past old Portuguese forts, stopping the first night in the historic town of Balibo, where in 1975, five Australian journalists were murdered in cold blood by invading Indonesian troops. The place is steeped in the Australian and Timorese consciousness , and was the subject of the gripping drama, Balibo, released in 2009. It will then journey through the farm plains of Maliana, the lush valleys of Ermera coffee country. Days 2 and 4 will see riders wind their way through the mountainous areas of Ainaro and Maubisse where you can take in stunning views of rugged mountains and misty valleys.
