For our 2011 expedition we will be travelling from Ho Chi Minh City to Siem Reap over 6 days. Our 9 cyclists will be doing a total of 389 kilometres stopping along towns and cities along the way. We will start our journey just outside Ho Chi Minh and cycle through the Mekong Delta and pass banana plantations and sugarcane fields while navigating narrow roads and paths . The first day is an intense 75km that will end with us taking a final ferry across the vast expanse that is the Cochien River to reach our first pit stop, Travinh. The next day entails a slighty more strenous and beautiful countryside ride from to the Khmer town of Cantho. The 80km trek will include dirt trails and country lanes that pass through the "heart of the Mekong Delta" From our stop over in Cantho, on the third day we continue to increase our distance to 85km to reach the town of Chau Doc. We will pass through Longxuyen and weave through the streets next to the Cairang floating market jam-packed with timber merchants, coconut shredders, and endless cottage industries. A day of rest awaits us as we take another ferry in to the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh. We will use this opportunity to connect with other NGOs and support organisations that have helped us during the trip and to take supplies up to Siem Reap for the CfC community. On the fifth day we get back on the saddle for the longest ride that covers 89km from Phnom Penh to Kampong Thom. Taking an alternative route from the busy roads we pass the 18th century capital of Udong right next to the giant stupas. In our adventurous spirit we have decided to stop off Skun which is known for its delicacies like fried spider and deep fried crickets. The final day from Kampong Thom we will be joined by several other cyclists for the final 60km to Siem Reap. In a stand of solidarity we hope to ride in to see our friends at CfC and show all the support that they have around them and which they truly deserve! |
