Spinning Dreams Cambodia

THE CONCEPT

Spinning Dreams Cambodia (2011) is Gone Cyclin’s second project.

The concept behind the project is to undertake a physically and mentally gruelling challenge to raise awareness for a sustainable social cause and thereby make a positive impact on society.

Our team has organised a 389km trip from Ho Chi Minh City to Siem Reap from the 19th-26th of June:
  • Support Cambodia - a young, developing country and democracy emerging out of a violent past
  • Raise awareness and SGD 50,000 of funds for Carpets for Communities (CfC) - a NGO based in Cambodia
  • Inspire young people to take on their own challenges to make a positive impact on society

THE BENEFICIARY - HOW CAN YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS MAKE A DIFFERENCE

The contributions and funds raised through Spinning Dreams Cambodia will go specifically towards Carpets for Communities

The Approach

CfC provides women of needy families with carpet-making supplies, equipment, and vocational training. They use their newly-acquired skills to hand-hook beautiful, export-quality rugs out of their homes. The carpets are bought back from the women at prices that guarantee living wages. Through this program, the women gain a sense of pride, not only from making high-quality products, but also from being able to support their families through their earned income.

In addition to this, once the mothers have built up their personal capabilities and confidence CfC supports them in developing growing their own micro-enterprises, allowing them to gain that final stage of independence and empowerment.

The Impact

By allowing the mothers to start producingcarpets within a very short time frame, it provides an immediate intervention solution to allow their children to return to school. Within 48 hours of a mother entering the program, their children can be off the streets and back in school.

“By 2012, CfC will return 2500 children at risk of exploitation to school by empowering 500 families in Cambodia and the world.”

180 children have been given the opportunity to be taken off the streets and back in school

41 families have been supported by CfC to be lifted out of poverty

26 families we are currently working with to establish micro-enterprises.
